Bologna, Italy.
Arriving in bologna was really exciting because I was going to see the first person that I’d be reuiniting with on this trip. My first year at UCSB, Michele lived in the apartment below me. Bolognia is the biggest city next to San Matteo della Decima where Michele lives. Seeing him again was a bit unreal. I remember how I felt driving to his house, I was so excited about how this was the beginning of reunions I’d be making. He told me that I was good to see me and I said the same, and I remember feeling so genuine about that. Most of the times when those words are exchanged its just a polite thing to say after not seeing someone for a long time, but I knew that wasn’t the case here. We got to his place in the late afternoon and freshened up for dinner. I swear his parents would be considered chefs here because the meal was amazing. After dinner Michele took us for a walk around his town. It was really cool to see where he grew up, what school he went to and etc. His town reminds me a lot of San Juan, small enough where you can see it in less than ten minutes but has more character than most big cities. We called it a night pretty early that night be we’d have to wake up early the next morning to go to Verona.
Verona was a city that I wanted to visit after talking to my friend Chris about my trip to Europe. It’s the city where Romeo and Juliet take place. We woke up early, hopped on a train and head over. We walked around the main city, saw the arena, had lunch in some piazza , and then went to see the statue and balcony of Juliet. It was really cute, nothing like how they portray it in letters to Juliet. There was graffiti of proclamations of love and I did love that. We also saw Rome’s house, its not as big of a tourist spot as Juliet’s but it was still cool to see places dedicated to Romeo and Juliet, a play that I’ve grown up reading. We caught a late afternoon train back to Bologna to prepare for the next day adventure to Venice.
Next to Barcelona, Venice is one of the prettiest cities I’ve ever seen. The cities in these places are nothing like American cities. They’re old and beautiful. Venice is full of canals and beautifully colored buildings. Although there wasn’t much to see, the city was enough. I feel like I could have walked around that city forever. We took a ferry ride from one end of venice to the other and then got back to the train to Michele’s. once we got back, he drove us to Ferrara, a city near Bologna. There we saw a huge castle and hung out in this huge piazza which was really cool. We got a drink from a bar and just hung out in this courtyard. There were at least 100 people my age all hanging out with their friends and drinking. It was so casual and normal, it was fun. It was also really different no where can you drink in public like that here. I wish I could just grab a bottle of wine and sit in a park with some friends and be as civilized as the Italians. After ferrara we headed home to pack up and get some rest because we were leaving the next day. The three days with Michele were great. They were relaxing and we saw so much. It was great to spend some time with him and learn more about where he is from.
Next stop on our list, Seina, Italy.
