Devin was spending her summer studying at a program in Siena, Italy. Tammy and I went there next to spend a long weekend with her before leaving Italy. The theme of his weekend was definitely " Girls just wanna have fun." :)
As I was lugging my suitcase onto the train, I hurt my back. I was less than pleased or pleasant about this situation. I tried to not let it put a damper on the weekend but if you’ve ever hurt your back then you know the kind of pain that I was experiencing. When we got to Siena, we had to walk to Devins apt from the train station. Unlike most of the other cities, Siena had a small town feel to it. To drive around seemed like a weird concept, I feel like walking is the main form of transportation. It also reminded me of an old medieval place. Our personal tour guide, Devin, told us all about the history of Seina on the walk to her apt. When we first got there we did a little sightseeing. We saw the Il Duomo and walked the piazza del campo. That night we got at a restaurant where Devin knew one of the waiters. He hooked us up with a variety of foods and we got to try a bunch of different things off their menu. After that we got ready for our first night out and went to this place where Devin and her friends usually go. The place was really cool but we didn’t stay out to long. We were tired and wanted to rest up for the rest of the weekend.
On the second day we went to the store to get food for a picnic and walked to the Fortessa for lunch. We just relaxed in the shade and caught up on our trip. It was nice change of pace from always moving around and sightseeing. After the picnic we went back to Devins and cooked again. This time we had gnocchi. We went to the piazza del campo and it was a lot like the piazza in Ferrara. Lots of kids hanging out and having a drink. Several of people were at restaurants eating and there were also a lot more families. These piazzas remind me a lot of Vegas without all of the trashiness.
The next day we set out for a day trip to Florence.
We took the bus and checked into our hostel which was one of the better hostels I stayed in while being in Europe. The man gave us this secluded room upstairs, It had three beds and its own private bathroom, pretty sweet for a last minute book!
We only had a day in Florence so we didn’t want to waste any time. We dropped off our stuff and headed towards the markets. It was the only time during the trip that I let myself go crazy. The prices at these markets were ridiculous. We shopped, bargained and walked around the city. After stopping for some gelato (of course) we headed back to our hostel to get ready for the night. We decided to try Mexican food and again it was pretty horrible. Italians just cant do Mexican. After dinner we wanted to check out a pub crawl. The pub crawl was lead by two Irish guys. We waited for it to begin and for people to show up but we ended up being the only ones to show. We almost decided against doing it, but figured we had nothing to lose so the three of us went to the first bar. The deal was the first hour was open bar, and then he would get us vip at every bar we went to and then into the club at the end without having to wait. So needless to say, we took advantage of that hour. After the open bar, we went to a karaoke bar which was great. I feel like there were more Americans than Italians but the place was very diverse. There were people on stages, singing and dancing, it was crazy. After there we went to Club Space. It was alright, kind of cool, full of creepers but we definitely made the best of it. We ended the night there and then went back to our hostel.
I, of course woke up super early the next morning, I didn’t want to bother tammy or devin so I got dressed and went for a walk around. I took some time to sit on a bench and take everything in. It was a special moment just because it was a rare moment where I had time alone time to soak everything in.
The rest of the day was spent sightseeing a bit more and then we hopped on a bus back to Siena. Exhausted from the weekend before we just relaxed and went to sleep early. The next day was going to be full of goodbyes and MORE TRAVEL.
